The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the silence up at Lempuyang Temple — not quiet like a library, but that kind of hush you get before sunrise when everything feels possible. Our driver Wayan picked us up right on time (even joked about my half-asleep face), and after two hours winding through villages and rice fields, we stepped out into cool mountain air. The “Gate of Heaven” was already drawing a small crowd, everyone lining up for that photo — but honestly, seeing Mount Agung framed by the stone gates felt bigger than any picture. I tried to pronounce “Lempuyang” properly; Wayan just grinned and told me to save my breath for the stairs.

I didn’t expect to enjoy Tirta Gangga as much as I did. The water garden is all koi ponds and carved statues, with kids laughing as they hopped across stepping stones. There was incense in the air — sweet but not too strong — and an old woman selling tiny offerings by the entrance. We wandered past fountains that looked almost European, which Wayan said was thanks to the old Karangasem kings wanting something grand. Lunch nearby was simple: nasi campur with sambal that nearly blew my head off (in a good way). I still think about those flavors.

Taman Ujung was next — it’s this faded palace surrounded by huge ponds where dragonflies skimmed over the water. The place felt both royal and a bit forgotten; you could see patches where time had chipped away at the paint. Not sure why, but that made it feel more real to me than some shiny museum. By afternoon we reached Virgin Beach — white sand, blue-green water, and hardly anyone around except a few fishermen fixing their boats. The sea breeze carried a hint of salt and grilled fish from a warung down the shore. We just sat there for ages, toes in the sand, not really talking much anymore.
