Hands raised between two stone pillars, the volcano framed perfectly behind—that's the Gate of Heaven at Lempuyang.

You're driven from Ubud to Lempuyang Temple's Gate of Heaven at 1,175 meters elevation, then to Tirta Gangga Water Palace, Bukit Asah hilltop, and Virgin Beach. Hotel pickup and drop-off included, plus an air-conditioned vehicle and English-speaking driver for the full 150-mile round trip. The 2.5-hour drive each way means you leave early and return in the evening.

The Experience

The drive from Ubud takes two and a half hours to reach the eastern slope of Mount Lempuyang, where Pura Penataran Agung sits at 1,175 meters above sea level. This is Bali's highest temple, and the Gate of Heaven—two ornate stone pillars framing Mount Agung and the valley below—is why most people make the trip. The line for photos can get long, especially midday, so timing matters. Your private driver picks you up from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and handles the full 150-mile round trip, which means you're not negotiating traffic or finding your way back.

After the temple, the day moves to Tirta Gangga Water Palace, a centuries-old royal garden from the Karangasem kingdom with pools, stone carvings, and water that locals believe has healing properties. The architecture pulls you back a few hundred years—it's the kind of place where you notice the detail in every carved stone and the way the water moves through the grounds. Then there's Bukit Asah, a hilltop with views of a small island separated from the main coast and a clear line of sight to the ocean. It's quieter than the temple, and the perspective shifts from spiritual to purely scenic.

Virgin Beach closes out the day—white sand, fewer crowds than the main tourist beaches, and enough space to actually sit without feeling rushed. By the time you're back at your hotel, you've covered four distinct stops across the eastern side of Bali, and your driver has handled every kilometer. The whole day is structured around a private vehicle and an English-speaking guide, so you're not coordinating with a group or waiting for a bus to fill up.
