The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell—wet earth and something sweet drifting from the rice paddies as we pulled up to Tegalalang. Our driver, Putu, had this easy way about him; he just laughed when I asked if people actually walk those steep terraces every day. “Since my grandfather,” he said. We followed narrow paths between the green rows, and I kept stopping to watch women in wide hats balancing baskets on their heads. The sun was already high but there was this coolness under the palm trees. I tried the Bali Swing (don’t ask about my face in those photos) and honestly, it’s scarier than it looks from below.

We headed next to a water temple—Gunung Kawi Sebatu, I think? The air changed completely: incense smoke mixed with frangipani flowers and the sound of water trickling everywhere. Locals were quietly doing purification rituals; our guide explained how each fountain meant something different. I hesitated before stepping into the spring (cold!) but felt weirdly calm after. There’s koi ponds and mossy stone carvings everywhere—felt like time slowed down for a bit.

Tegenungan Waterfall was louder than I expected—kids shouting, water crashing over rocks, people laughing while trying not to slip on the stones. We swam for a bit (the current is stronger than it looks), then dried off in the sun with fried bananas from a little stall nearby. Lunch was in some roadside warung—spicy chicken satay and that smoky sambal that makes your lips tingle for ages. Later we wandered through Mas Village’s woodcarving shops; one old man let me try his chisel but mostly just shook his head at my attempt.

I still think about that coffee tasting stop: earthy Luwak coffee poured slow into tiny cups while roosters crowed somewhere behind us. By late afternoon, we walked through Ubud’s art market where everything felt bright and busy—batik shirts flapping in the breeze, kids darting around with ice creams melting down their arms. It all blurs together now but there’s this feeling I can’t shake—like Bali gets under your skin in small ways you don’t notice until later.
