You’ll ride an ATV quad bike through muddy trails near Ubud, splash across rivers and canyons, stop at Gorilla Cave and a hidden waterfall with your local guide, then share lunch overlooking rice terraces. Expect laughter, muddy boots, and one or two moments that’ll stick with you long after you’re back in town.
Helmet on, engine rumbling under me — I could smell wet earth before we even started moving. Our guide, Kadek, grinned and made sure we all knew which lever was the brake (I double-checked). The quad bikes looked tougher than I felt, honestly. We kicked up mud almost instantly, weaving past rice paddies where a couple of farmers waved at us like they saw this every day. Maybe they do. The air was thick and green — that’s the only way I can describe it — and my arms already felt the handlebar vibrations.
The first real jolt came when we dipped into a shallow river crossing. Cold water splashed my boots (they give you boots, thank god) and someone behind me whooped so loud it echoed off the canyon walls. Kadek pointed out a little shrine tucked into the roots of a banyan tree — he said people leave offerings there for safe travels. I fumbled my phone trying to get a photo but mostly just got blurry streaks of jungle. Then suddenly we were at the Gorilla Cave, which really does have this wild face carved into stone — kind of goofy but weirdly impressive too.
I didn’t expect to care about the waterfall as much as I did, but after all that noise and mud, standing in front of it felt like hitting pause on everything. It smelled mossy and cool; you could hear nothing but water for a minute if you stood still enough. We took turns posing for photos — mine’s just me grinning like an idiot with helmet hair. Afterward, lunch was set up overlooking these ridiculous green rice terraces. The food was simple but good (I went vegetarian), and everyone swapped stories about who got stuck or nearly tipped over (me). Honestly, I still think about that view sometimes — how quiet it got after all the engines shut off.
Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off if needed, all entry fees and taxes covered up front, use of helmet and boots plus lockers for your stuff, professional instruction from local guides like Kadek before you hit the trail, insurance throughout the activity, access to towels and showers afterward to wash off all that mud, plus a simple lunch (vegetarian options too) overlooking Ubud’s greenest rice terraces before heading back to town.
