The experience
“Don’t worry if you get muddy. It’s part of the fun,” our instructor Wayan grinned as he handed me a helmet that still smelled faintly of last night’s rain. I tried to look confident but my boots squelched in the red clay before we’d even started. The base camp felt alive: roosters somewhere behind the trees, staff waving, the air thick and green. Wayan explained everything twice (maybe because I kept fiddling with the controls). He laughed when I asked if people ever chicken out in the tunnel. “Sometimes! But today is good day.”
The first stretch was bumpy enough to make my teeth chatter, but honestly that was nothing compared to entering the old tunnel. It was dark and cool inside: water dripping from above, echoing off stone walls. The smell reminded me of wet earth after a storm. Lunch was simple: egg sandwiches and sweet tea in the shade while everyone compared muddy knees. It wasn’t fancy but it hit different after all that adrenaline.
