The experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell: wet earth and something green, almost sharp, just outside Ubud. Our guide Wayan grinned as he handed me a helmet that still had a bit of yesterday’s mud on it (I liked that, honestly). The quad bike looked heavier than I expected. I stalled it once before we even got moving: Wayan just laughed and said, “No rush here.” That set the tone for the whole ride.

We rumbled out past a line of ducks in the rice fields, their little feet slapping in puddles. The engine echoed weirdly inside this long tunnel (700 meters, Wayan said), and my voice bounced back at me when I whooped. It was cool and damp in there, then suddenly bright again as we burst out into sunlight. There was this moment where the jungle opened up to a waterfall. Mist on my face, water roaring so loud I couldn’t hear anything else for a second. My boots squelched when we stopped to look at it up close.

I didn’t expect to feel so much like a kid again: splashing through muddy rivers, trying not to tip over on the fun up-and-down trails (I failed once, no shame). We passed a couple of old women waving from their porch in the village. Wayan told us about his uncle who still plants rice by hand. Lunch after felt simple but perfect: fried noodles and sweet tea while our clothes dried out in the sun.
