The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the sound—water echoing inside the cave, bouncing off stone in a way that made every drip seem louder. We’d barely left the van (hotel pickup was smooth, by the way) before our guide, Wayan, handed out helmets and tubes. He grinned at my nervous laugh—said it’s “lazy” tubing for a reason. The river looked calm but alive, green light flickering through leaves above us. I could smell wet earth and something sweet, maybe wild ginger? Not sure.

Once we got going, I just let myself drift. The tube felt steady—no wild rapids here—and Wayan floated nearby, pointing out little bats clinging to the cave ceiling. At one point he nudged my tube so I spun slowly under a curtain of vines; honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so peaceful. There were birds somewhere in the trees but mostly it was quiet except for us laughing when someone (okay, me) bumped into a rock wall. If you’re looking for a day trip in Ubud that’s easy on nerves but still feels like an adventure, this is it.

I added the ATV combo because… why not? After drying off (showers are right there), we swapped helmets and set off along muddy tracks behind another guide named Kadek. My shoes will never be clean again but it was worth it—at one point we splashed straight through a shallow stream and Kadek cheered like he’d won something. The whole thing took about three hours plus travel time from Ubud; not too long but enough that my arms felt pleasantly tired after.

Back at the base there was mineral water waiting and everyone comparing mud stains like trophies. Locker access meant I didn’t have to worry about my stuff getting soaked—a small detail but kind of important when you’re clumsy like me. Even now I keep thinking about that moment in the cave when everything went quiet except for the river echoing around us…
