The Experience

Boots thumping in the dust, I watched Wayan—our guide—tie a scarf around his head before grinning at us. He said something about “more mud, more fun,” which made me laugh but also a little nervous. The engines started up with that throaty rumble and suddenly we were off, weaving between banana trees and tiny shrines tucked under frangipani branches.
