The Experience

Helmet strap digging just a bit under my chin, I tried to listen as Wayan mimed how to hold the paddle — his grin was contagious, even if his English was a little patchy (honestly, so is my Bahasa). The Ayung River looked calmer from above, but once we pushed off, it was all shouts and water spray. There was this moment when we drifted under a curtain of vines and I caught the sharp smell of wet earth — not something you can bottle up. Our guide kept pointing out carvings in the rocks that I’d have missed, telling us stories about spirits in the river. I didn’t expect to feel so awake.

After peeling off soggy shoes (my toes wrinkled like prunes), lunch was this buffet where everyone just sort of piled plates high and compared bruises — one Aussie guy had mud on his ear somehow. Then it was helmets again for the Bali ATV ride. The engine rumbled under me, and suddenly we were weaving through rice paddies, splashing through puddles that left streaks on my arms. My friend shrieked every time we hit a bump; I couldn’t stop laughing. At one point, a farmer waved at us with both hands, straw hat wobbling. The air tasted faintly metallic after the rain.

I still think about that first cold splash when we hit the river — it woke up something in me. This day trip from Ubud is messy and loud and full of tiny surprises you don’t see coming. If you’re after polish or quiet temples, maybe skip it. But if you want to come back to your hotel with mud on your knees and new stories to text home about…well, you know.
