The Experience
I didn’t really know what to expect from an “ATV quad bike tour in Ubud”—I just knew I wanted something that’d shake me awake after too many days on the beach. Our driver picked us up right from Seminyak (so easy, honestly), and I remember the air changing as we got closer to the rice fields—warm but sharp with that earthy smell after rain. The guides were already grinning at us when we arrived, like they’d seen a hundred nervous faces before. I was definitely one of them.
The quad bikes looked heavier than I thought, but once we started moving—mud splattering my shoes almost immediately—I kind of forgot about being self-conscious. We zipped past bamboo groves and through puddles deep enough to make me yelp (our guide Wayan laughed every time). There’s this moment when you come out of the trees and suddenly there’s just green all around—rice paddies shining in the sun, a few ducks waddling by. My hands were shaking from adrenaline or maybe just excitement. We stopped for lunch after two hours, and I swear food never tastes as good as when you’re still half-covered in mud.
After a quick shower (they hand you towels so you don’t have to worry), we headed out again—this time to Sangeh Sacred Monkey Forest. The macaques are everywhere, darting between temple stones and eyeing our bags like tiny pickpockets. One hopped onto my shoulder for a second—felt lighter than I expected—and then was gone before I could react. The forest itself is quiet in that way only old places can be; even with all the monkeys chattering, there’s this hush under the giant nutmeg trees.
Tegenungan Waterfall was our last stop. You hear it before you see it—a steady roar behind thick leaves—and then suddenly there’s mist on your face and water crashing down into a pool that looks almost unreal. Some people were swimming but I just sat on a rock for a while, letting my shoes dry out and watching sunlight flicker through the spray. It’s funny how fast a day can go when you’re actually paying attention. On the drive back, Wayan asked if we’d do it again next year—I said yes without thinking, which probably says everything.
