The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so much at myself trying to steer a 350cc quad bike through Bali’s thick mud — but honestly, it was impossible not to. The morning started with our driver, Wayan, waving from the van outside our hotel in Ubud. He had this easy way of chatting about the villages as we passed; I caught the scent of clove cigarettes drifting in from his window. When we pulled up at Bali Pertiwi Adventures, I could already hear engines rumbling somewhere behind the rice paddies.

The guides gave us a quick run-through (I probably looked nervous — helmets always make me feel like I’m about to do something wild). We set off along these winding jungle tracks, splashing through streams and bumping over roots. The air was thick and green, and every so often you’d catch a glimpse of someone’s laundry flapping between banana trees. My hands were covered in red dirt by the end. We stopped for photos — there’s this one spot where you can see all the way down the valley, sunlight catching on water below. It’s stuck with me.

Lunch was an Indonesian buffet overlooking more rice fields than I could count — satay skewers, that sweet chili smell everywhere. After that, we drove to Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Monkeys everywhere (one tried to grab my sunglasses; Li laughed when I tried to say “hello” in Bahasa). It felt oddly peaceful under those old banyan trees — just monkeys chattering and tourists giggling nervously.

Tegenungan waterfall was last. You hear it before you see it — all that white noise and spray hitting your face as you get close. Some people went right down to the pool but I just watched for a while from above, letting my shoes dry out on a warm rock. On the drive back Wayan asked if we wanted music or just quiet; we chose quiet, windows open, just listening to the road and thinking about everything we’d seen.
