The Experience

“You sure you’ve driven one of these before?” our guide grinned at me as I tried to figure out the ATV throttle. I wasn’t, honestly — but he just laughed and showed me again, way more patient than I deserved. The air in Ubud that morning was thick and earthy, like wet leaves after rain. We set off behind him, engines rumbling low, and the first thing that hit me was how different Bali feels when you’re not stuck in traffic or dodging scooters.

The quadbike tour took us straight off the paved roads into rice fields where everything looked so green it almost hurt my eyes. Our guide — Kadek — pointed out a farmer waving from his field. There was a moment when we dipped into a tunnel; it was dark, cool, echoing with our laughter (and maybe my nervous yelp). I could smell damp stone and something sweet from outside — frangipani maybe? My boots squelched in mud every time we stopped. Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy getting splattered so much.

We reached the waterfall after a stretch of jungle trail where sunlight kept flickering through palm leaves. The water crashed down loud enough to drown out our engines for once. Kadek insisted on taking our photo there (“Instagram! You must!”), but what I remember is how cold the spray felt on my face after all that dust. Afterward, there was time to shower off the mud (so much mud) before lunch — spicy chicken and rice that tasted extra good because we’d earned it.
