The Experience

I’ll be honest, I was nervous when our driver showed up outside the hotel in Ubud — I’d barely slept, kept thinking about what “mud terrain” really meant. But he greeted us with this easy smile and the car was cool inside (thank god for A/C), so I just let myself go along for it. The drive out to the quad bike base was quiet except for the sound of scooters zipping past and that faint smell of incense from morning offerings. When we arrived, they handed us helmets and a welcome drink — something sweet and cold that tasted vaguely like coconut, but maybe I’m wrong.

The quad bike ride is what stuck with me most. We tore through rice fields where farmers waved at us (one kid tried to race us on foot — he won), then into these shadowy bits of jungle where everything felt damp and alive. At one point we hit a patch of mud so thick my shoes almost came off, and our instructor Nyoman just laughed and yelled something in Balinese I didn’t catch. There were caves too — dark, echoey, cooler than outside. My hands were shaking a bit after the hills but in a good way, like after you’ve done something you weren’t sure you could do.

Lunch was this buffet spread — fried noodles, satay skewers, spicy sambal that made my nose run (I pretended it didn’t). We ate outside with other groups; everyone looked equally sunburnt and happy. After that came rafting on the Ayung River. Our guide Wayan kept making jokes about “Bali massage” every time we hit a rapid. The water was colder than I expected but honestly refreshing after all that dust from the ATV ride. There were moments when everything went quiet except for the birds and the splash of paddles — those are the bits I still think about sometimes.
