The Experience

We tumbled into the car just after sunrise—honestly, I was barely awake but our guide Wayan greeted us with this soft “Selamat pagi” and a grin. He had tiny packets of bottled water waiting (which I didn’t realize I’d need so badly later). First stop: the Gate of Heaven at Lempuyang. There was already a line for photos but the clouds around Mount Agung kept shifting, so every few minutes the whole scene changed. I tried to say thank you in Balinese and Wayan just laughed—my accent is hopeless.

After that we zigzagged through villages where roosters strutted along the road and women carried baskets on their heads. The air smelled like clove cigarettes and rain on warm earth. Tirta Gangga Water Garden surprised me—it’s quieter than Instagram makes it look, koi fish everywhere, little kids feeding them bits of bread. I dipped my hand in the cool water by accident (slipped on a stone) and Wayan said that’s good luck. Maybe he was just being nice.

The rice terraces at Tegalalang were next—so green it almost hurt my eyes. We watched farmers balancing on muddy ledges with sickles, moving slow but steady. There’s something hypnotic about it; I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in city traffic back home. Lunch was somewhere roadside—simple nasi campur—and then we cooled off at Tegenungan Waterfall. The spray felt sharp against my skin after all that heat. Didn’t swim but sat on a rock with my feet in the water for a while, just listening to everyone laughing nearby.

By late afternoon we made it to Tanah Lot Temple as the tide started coming in—waves crashing against the rock, vendors selling incense and cold drinks. My shirt was damp from humidity and probably waterfall mist too, but honestly I didn’t care anymore. The sun dropped low behind the temple and for a second everything went quiet except for the ocean—one of those moments you don’t expect but kind of stay with you.
