The experience

We tumbled into the car just after sunrise: honestly, I was barely awake but our guide Wayan greeted us with this soft “Selamat pagi” and a grin. He had tiny packets of bottled water waiting (which I didn’t realize I’d need so badly later). First stop: the Gate of Heaven at Lempuyang.
