The experience

Your driver picks you up at your hotel and takes you first to the monkey forest near Ubud, where you walk shaded paths through thick forest to see birds, lizards, butterflies and monkeys among the trees. Three sacred temples sit within the forest to balance the space, and local people come here to pray on ceremony days. From there you drive north to Tegalalang rice terrace, where you walk among the lush green rice fields and watch farmers at work in their daily activities: the terraces show the traditional Balinese way of life that most visitors never see.

Lunch happens at a jungle restaurant set in a natural environment, then you head to Taman Ayun Temple, the royal temple of the Mengwi Empire built in 1634 as a family temple to deified ancestors. The temple sits on land surrounded by a large fish pond and looks like it drifts on the water. The multistoried roof and Balinese architecture make it one of the most photographed temples on the island. Your guide explains the history and the spiritual purpose as you walk through.

The day ends at Tanah Lot Temple, one of Bali's most important temples, built in the 11th century on rock that rises from the ocean. You can only access it at low tide, and your guide times the visit so you're there for the sunset: the most photographed light in Bali. The temple sits framed against the water and the sky as the sun drops, and you watch from the rocks while your driver waits with the minivan.
