The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound—the waves slamming against the rocks at Tanah Lot Temple. I could smell salt and incense at the same time, which felt oddly comforting. Our driver Kadek grinned when I asked if it ever gets old for him. “Never,” he said, and pointed out a tiny crab scuttling across the black stone. We stood there a while, just watching the water crash around this ancient place. I tried to take a photo but honestly, it didn’t capture how wild it felt.

After that we stopped at Batu Bolong Temple—there’s this natural stone arch that almost looks too perfect to be real. Some locals were placing offerings; I tried not to stare but their quiet focus was kind of mesmerizing. Then came the drive up into the hills—windows down, air getting cooler—and suddenly Lake Beratan appeared out of low clouds. The Ulun Danu Temple really does look like it’s floating. There was a group of kids feeding koi near the shore; one of them waved at us with both hands and then hid behind his mom when we waved back.

I didn’t expect to love Yeh Ho Waterfall as much as I did. It isn’t huge or dramatic—it’s more like a secret tucked away behind rice paddies in Jatiluwih. We walked past farmers working in muddy fields (one of them called out “Selamat pagi!” and laughed when I tried to reply). The water was cold on my feet and there was this earthy smell from all the wet plants around us. By then my shirt was sticking to my back, but I didn’t really care.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces were last—just endless green steps rolling off in every direction. Kadek explained how families have worked these fields for generations; he sounded proud, like he belonged here even though he lives in Denpasar now. We wandered along narrow paths between paddies and I kept stopping just to listen to frogs or watch dragonflies hover over the water. It felt peaceful in a way that stuck with me long after we left Bali.
