Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Monkey Forest, Temples, and Sunset

  • Visit Monkey Forest sanctuary
  • Walk through scenic rice paddies
  • Relax and sample traditional snacks
  • Explore Taman Ayun Temple
  • Watch sunset at Tanah Lot Temple

The Experience

The tour starts at the Monkey Forest in Sangeh, where hundreds of long-tailed macaques live freely among towering nutmeg trees. You watch them move through their natural habitat—no enclosures, no performance—then move on to the countryside by coach. A short walk of about 300 meters takes you through rice paddies cultivated in the traditional Balinese style, with coconut trees and crops like sweet potatoes and tapioca planted between the water. At the end of the walk, you rest in a Balinese pavilion and sample fried tapioca and sweet potato with tea, coffee or mineral water.

From the rice paddies, the route continues to Taman Ayun Temple in Mengwi, built in 1634 and surrounded by a moat. The complex holds multi-roofed meru shrines and intricately carved wooden gates—the kind of architectural detail that takes time to absorb. The guide explains what you're standing in front of and the history the structure carries. The final stop is Tanah Lot, the Sunset Temple, built on a lava rock formation 200 meters offshore. You arrive in time to watch the sun drop behind the black lava towers of the 16th-century temple, the moment most visitors come for.

An English-speaking licensed guide leads the entire day, and the coach picks you up from your hotel in Kuta, Seminyak, Sanur or Nusa Dua and returns you there at the end. The eight-hour itinerary holds all three sites, the rice paddy walk and the refreshment stop without rushing between them. Insurance is included; gratuities and any meals beyond the tapioca and drinks are separate.
