The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Kuta and a drive northwest to Taman Ayun Temple near Mengwi, about 18 km away. Built in 1634 by the Raja of Mengwi, the temple sits in a walled park crossed by broad canals; you enter via a richly carved candi bentar gate and walk a paved path past a central pond with a nine-jet fountain—four jets aligned to the cardinal points, four to the sub-cardinal points, and one at the center, each representing the nine main gods of Balinese Hinduism. The outer and middle courtyards are open to visitors; the innermost sanctuary is sealed except during the odalan ceremony held every 210 days.

From Taman Ayun, the driver takes you northwest to Tanah Lot Temple, about 20 km from Kuta. This temple sits on a rocky outcrop surrounded by crashing waves and is one of Bali's most recognizable landmarks. The onshore complex includes smaller shrines, restaurants, shops, and a cultural park where dance performances run regularly. You have time to walk the grounds, photograph the temple against the water, and explore the facilities before returning to your hotel.
