The experience
You're picked up from your Seminyak hotel in the morning and driven inland toward the highlands. The route passes Batukaru Temple and a local fruit market on the way up. Taman Ayun Temple comes first: a four-tiered complex with separate divisions, a guardian shrine near the entrance, and a tall fountain aligned to the cardinal directions. From there you continue to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, which sits on the western shore of Beratan Lake in the cooler Bedugul area. The temple is one of Bali's most photographed landmarks, and the lake setting frames it distinctly from the coastal temples you'll see later.
The centerpiece is Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering over 600 hectares of rice fields that follow the Batukaru mountain slopes. A traditional water management system called subak, dating back to the 9th century, still maintains these terraces. You walk through the tiered landscape and see how the cooperative shaped Bali's cultural identity. After exploring the rice fields, you stop at Penatahan Hot Springs, where thermal waters from Mount Batukaru flow down the hillside into a series of pools alongside a river. You can soak in the natural hot water before lunch.
The day ends at Tanah Lot Temple, an ancient shrine built on a rocky outcrop surrounded by crashing waves. You arrive in time to watch the sunset from the onshore site, which has smaller shrines, restaurants, shops and a cultural park with regular dance performances. The temple sits about 20 kilometers northwest of Kuta and is one of Bali's most recognizable icons. Your driver returns you to your hotel after dark.
