"The manta rays come through here almost every dive," our driver said as we pulled away from the hotel at 6:30 AM, already checking his phone for the day's conditions. He wasn't exaggerating — Manta Bay is one of those places in Bali where you're almost certain to see them if the current cooperates, along with spotted stingrays and nurse sharks moving through water that gets cold fast because of the open Indian Ocean. The speedboat ride from Sanur Beach takes about 45 minutes, and the boat itself is shared with other travelers, which keeps the cost down and the energy up. You don't need to bring your own gear — masks, fins, and life jackets are all there waiting, which saves you from packing wet equipment back to your hotel.

The snorkeling stops come in quick succession: Manta Bay first, then Crystal Bay where the water is so clear you can see schools of anthias and batfish weaving through the shallows, and then Gamat Bay, which stays quieter because fewer groups venture there.
