The experience
The pickup arrives between 6 and 6:30am. Early enough that Seminyak is still quiet. You ride to Sanur harbor, check in around 7:30, and by 8am the boat is moving toward Nusa Penida. The crossing takes an hour. Most people sleep or stare at the water. Then the boat slows, and the guide points: Manta Bay. The water is so clear you see the sand thirty feet down, and if the weather holds and the mantas are feeding, you're in the water with them within minutes. They're huge and gentle, nothing like what you imagined from photos.
The snorkeling rotation depends on conditions (Manta Bay, Crystal Bay, Gamat Bay, The Wall, GT Point) the guide reads the weather and the current and picks the spots that work that day. You get maybe three hours in the water across two or three sites, with a break between dives. Around 11:30 you eat lunch on the boat or back at the harbor, nothing fancy but enough.
