The Experience

I didn’t expect the drive from Cairo to the Giza Pyramids to feel so quick—one minute city noise, then suddenly this wide desert sky. Our guide, Ahmed, had this way of telling stories that made the whole thing feel less like a tour and more like hanging out with someone who really loves his city. He pointed out the little details I’d have missed on my own: the way the limestone blocks still hold heat from centuries ago, or how you can spot where old restoration attempts left their mark. There was this dry wind that caught in my throat a bit—I guess that’s what history tastes like?

Standing at the base of the Great Pyramid of Giza is weirdly humbling. It’s so much bigger than photos ever show. Ahmed told us about Khufu and then just let us stand there for a while—no rush. There were school kids running around laughing (one tried to sell me a postcard, which I bought even though I’ll probably lose it). The camel ride was both hilarious and slightly terrifying at first—my camel was named “Sultan” and he seemed to know he was in charge. The view from up there, looking back at all three pyramids lined up against that pale blue sky... I still think about that.

Lunch was in this small place away from the crowds—flatbread warm from the oven, grilled chicken with spices I couldn’t name (Ahmed laughed when I tried). The tea after tasted sweet and smoky at once. We finished at the Great Sphinx of Giza. Up close it’s more battered than I expected but somehow more alive? There were cats sunning themselves on broken stones. On the way back to Cairo, sand stuck to my shoes and I realized I’d barely checked my phone all day.
