The Experience

I’ll admit it — I almost missed the pickup because I couldn’t find my other shoe. Our guide, Ahmed, just grinned when I finally made it down to the van (still tying my laces), and somehow that set the tone for the day. The drive from our Cairo hotel to the Giza pyramids was all honking horns and flashes of gold morning light through dusty windows. Ahmed told us about his childhood in Giza — he used to sneak up to the plateau after school. That made me look at those pyramids differently, honestly.

Standing in front of the Great Pyramid felt heavier than I expected. The air had this dry chalky smell, and camels snorted somewhere behind us. Ahmed explained how each stone was hauled here by hand — then he laughed when I tried to pronounce “Khufu” like a local (I definitely didn’t). We did that classic panorama photo thing but what stuck with me was just leaning against warm limestone, feeling tiny. The camel ride around the pyramids was bouncier than I thought — my knees still remember it.

Lunch came right after — grilled chicken and rice at a restaurant facing the Sphinx. The spices clung to my fingers for ages. Watching families pose for photos while we ate felt oddly comforting; it’s noisy but sort of peaceful too. Later at the Citadel, there was this echo inside the Alabaster Mosque that made everyone whisper without thinking about it. The view over Islamic Cairo from up there is something I still think about on grey days back home.

Coptic Cairo was quieter — cool stone underfoot in the Hanging Church, incense lingering in corners. Ahmed pointed out carvings that most people miss (he said his grandmother brought him here as a kid). By then we were tired but happy to trail behind him past old walls and tiny shrines. Honestly, by the time we got back to our hotel I’d stopped worrying about my missing shoe entirely.
