The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the morning air in Cairo felt—dusty but not unpleasant, almost like you could taste history if you breathed deep enough. Our guide, Amira, met us right at our hotel door (I still can’t get over how she managed to spot us in that lobby chaos), and we set off through streets already buzzing with horns and laughter. It wasn’t long before those unmistakable shapes started rising out of the haze—the Giza Pyramids just sitting there like they always have. I actually got goosebumps when we stepped out of the van. You see them in photos all your life but standing there… it’s different.

Amira had this way of weaving stories about Cheops and Khafre as we walked—she’d point at a block of stone or a faded carving and suddenly you could picture people moving through these same spaces 4,000 years ago. The keyword “Giza Pyramids” doesn’t do justice to how massive they feel up close; even the smallest one (Menkaure) made me feel tiny. We went inside one of the pyramids (extra ticket—Amira sorted it in seconds) and I swear the air changed—cooler, almost humming with silence. My knees wobbled a bit on those steep steps but it was worth every awkward shuffle.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much on a day trip to Giza from Cairo, but between Amira’s jokes about ancient pharaohs’ diets and my own failed attempt at camel riding (“Lean back! No, more!”), there were plenty of smiles. The camel ride itself was surreal—one minute you’re squinting at limestone under your feet, next you’re swaying above it all with that wild panorama: six pyramids in one sweep, city on one side, desert forever on the other. The camels smelled… well, exactly like camels should. Lunch after was simple but good—flatbread still warm from the oven, tahini that tasted brighter than any I’ve had back home.

The last stop was the Great Sphinx of Giza. Up close its face is worn but somehow gentle—I watched a little girl touch its paw and her dad snapped a photo while our group just stood quietly for a second. Something about that moment stuck with me; maybe because even surrounded by tourists and selfie sticks there was this hush like everyone felt how old and strange it all was. Anyway, we piled back into the van sunburned and happy, sand in our shoes.
