The experience

Your guide picks you up from your Cairo or Giza hotel and drives you to the Giza plateau, where the three main pyramids (Khufu's, Khafre's, and Menkaure's) rise from the desert floor. Khufu's Great Pyramid is the only survivor of the ancient seven wonders, and at 481 feet it held the record as the world's tallest building for over 3,800 years. Your Egyptologist walks you through the complex, explaining the construction methods, the royal burials, and the purpose of each structure. The granite outer casing on Menkaure's pyramid is still visible on the lower sections: stone quarried from Aswan, over 1,000 kilometers away.

The tour includes the Valley Temple of Khafre, where the mummification process took place, and a close-up view of the Great Sphinx, the limestone guardian with a lion's body and the head of King Khafre. You'll stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking all six pyramids and the city of Giza for about 30 minutes. This is where most travelers take their best photographs and, if you've added a camel ride, where you can arrange it. The guide is trained in photography and will help you frame the shots.

The tour runs 4 to 5 hours total. You control the stops and how long you linger at each site. The guide adjusts the depth of historical detail based on what you ask. Entrance tickets to the pyramid complex are optional. You can buy them separately at the gate, or bundle them with the tour at checkout. If you choose the all-inclusive option, a traditional Egyptian lunch is included. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and the guide speaks English.
