The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel and drives you to Giza in a private air-conditioned vehicle: no shared minibus, no waiting for other travelers. The day opens at the Great Pyramids, where you walk among the three monuments built by Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. Your guide explains how they were constructed and why, and you have time to touch the stone and absorb the scale before moving on. The Pyramid of Menkaure lets you step inside. The Great Pyramid itself is optional and arranged through your guide if you want interior access.

From the main pyramids you head to the panorama area for a 30-minute camel ride across the desert, with the monuments behind you and open sand around. The light and the angle are what make the photographs work here. After the ride, the tour moves to the valley of the Sphinx, where your guide walks you through the remains of an ancient harbor and then to the Great Sphinx itself, where the stories shift to this statue and what it guarded. You stop at the Queen's Pyramids, the smaller monuments built for the royal women, and have time for pictures before heading to lunch at a restaurant.

The tour is seven hours from start to finish. Shopping stops are optional and only happen if you ask. There's no pressure and no mandatory detours. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian or one of three other languages, and has over twenty years of experience with these sites. Children from age one are welcome, and the pace suits all fitness levels.
