Walk inside Giza’s pyramids, meet the Sphinx and ride a camel under desert sky
You’ll walk inside an ancient pyramid at Giza, ride a camel across golden sand with all three pyramids in view, stand beneath the Sphinx’s silent gaze, and share lunch with locals. The Experience
I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice at Giza would be the sound—just this low hum of voices and wind swirling sand around my ankles. Our guide, Ahmed, grinned when he saw me staring up at the Great Pyramid like I’d never seen rocks before. He handed me a bottle of water (I was already sweating) and started telling stories about Khufu and how they still argue about how these blocks got here. The air smelled dry, almost metallic, but there was this faint whiff of grilled onions from somewhere nearby—maybe someone’s lunch?
Going inside the pyramid was… well, tighter than I thought. The passage sloped up so sharply my knees cracked (loudly—Ahmed pretended not to hear). It was dim and cool in there; all you could hear was your own breath echoing back at you. I touched the wall just once—felt cold stone under my palm—and tried to picture what it must’ve been like building this in a world with no machines. After we came out blinking into sunlight again, Ahmed pointed out where Khafre’s pyramid sits higher on the plateau so it looks taller than Khufu’s even though it isn’t. Smart trick.
The camel ride? Honestly, I laughed more than I expected. My camel’s name was Rambo (no idea if that’s his real name), and he kept turning his head to check on me like he knew I had no clue what I was doing. From up there you get that postcard view—three pyramids lined up against pale blue sky, Cairo smudged in the distance. Someone else’s guide sang softly in Arabic as we rode past; it carried on the wind for a second before fading out.
Lunch after all that dust felt like a reward—falafel wrapped in warm bread and kushary piled high with lentils and crispy onions. Ahmed showed us how to eat it properly (“No fork! Like this!”), then told us about his grandmother’s recipe while we sat in the shade watching tour buses come and go. I still think about that meal sometimes when I smell cumin at home.
