The Experience

The first thing I noticed wasn’t the pyramids—honestly, it was the way my guide, Mahmoud, grinned as he helped me clamber onto the camel. The animal’s fur was rougher than I’d imagined, and there was this faint smell of hay and something sweet, maybe dates from a nearby vendor. We set off slowly, just as the sun started to climb above Cairo’s morning haze. The Giza Plateau looked almost unreal from up here—like someone had painted it in layers of gold and dust. I’d seen photos of the Great Pyramid of Giza all my life, but riding up to it on a camel makes you feel small in a good way. There’s this hush that settles when you get close—except for the soft pad of hooves and Mahmoud’s low voice telling stories about workers’ villages hidden under sand.
