The Experience

Hotel pickup starts the day, and your guide meets you there to begin the drive to Giza. The Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure stand on the Giza Plateau about 13 kilometers southwest of central Cairo. All three were built during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. The Great Pyramid and Khafre's are the two largest pyramids ever constructed in ancient Egypt. The Great Sphinx of Giza, a limestone statue 73 meters long with the body of a lion and a human head, faces directly west to east from the same plateau and is believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre. Your guide walks you through the complex and explains the architecture and history of each structure.

After Giza, the tour continues 27 kilometers southwest to Saqqara. The Step Pyramid, built for King Zoser, marks a turning point in pyramid evolution. It represents the transition from the simple mastaba tombs to the pyramid form. You'll also see the Pyramid of Unas, the smallest Old Kingdom pyramid but significant for containing the earliest Pyramid Texts, spells inscribed into the burial chambers for the pharaoh's afterlife. The Pyramid of Teti and the Mastaba of Ti, with its scenes of everyday life carved into the walls, round out the site.

The final stop is Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt dating back to 3100 BC, about an hour's drive from Saqqara. Here you stand in front of the colossal statue of Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx. If you've selected the lunch option, you'll eat at a local restaurant serving Egyptian food before the return drive to your hotel. Bottled water is provided throughout the day, and all entry fees are included in the price.
