The Experience

I always thought the Giza Pyramids would feel like something out of a museum—distant, almost unreal. But standing there, sand crunching under my shoes and the air already warm even at 9 a.m., it was just... raw. Our guide, Ahmed, met us in the hotel lobby (he waved first—I was still fumbling with my bag) and we drove through Cairo’s morning buzz. There’s this moment when you first spot the pyramids between buildings—like they’re just waiting for you.

Ahmed started telling us stories about Cheops and Chephren as we walked up to those giant stones. I kept touching the limestone blocks when he wasn’t looking—cooler than I expected. He explained how long it took to build them (I can’t remember the exact years now, but it sounded impossible). The Sphinx was next. It’s smaller than I pictured but somehow more mysterious up close; there’s this quietness around it that made me pause. Ahmed joked about its missing nose—apparently everyone asks—and then pointed out where ancient priests did their rituals at the Valley Temple. The place smells dusty and old in a way that feels honest.

The camel ride was both hilarious and slightly terrifying at first—the camels are taller than you think! My camel was named Mona; she kept turning her head like she wanted to check if I was still there. We rode out onto this little plateau where Ahmed showed us “the photo spot.” Honestly? The view of all three pyramids lined up with Cairo in the haze behind... I still think about that view sometimes.
