The Experience
Hands pressed against cool limestone — that’s how I remember first touching the Giza Pyramids. Our guide, Hossam, had just finished telling us about Khufu’s wild ambitions when he laughed and said, “Go ahead, touch history.” The sun was already high but there was this dry breeze carrying little bursts of sand. I tried to picture what it must’ve looked like 4,000 years ago. Hard to imagine with all the selfie sticks around, but still — you feel something old and stubborn in those stones.
I’d been nervous about haggling or getting lost in the crowds, but honestly? With Hossam leading us through shortcuts and waving off persistent vendors (he did it with this gentle shrug — very Egyptian), it felt easy. He pointed out where to stand for the classic three-pyramid shot. My camel was named Lulu; she grumbled when I climbed on. Riding past the pyramids on that camel… well, it’s bumpy and kind of hilarious if you’re not used to it. But seeing the whole plateau stretch out with Cairo’s haze behind you? That sticks with me.
Afterwards we wandered down toward the Great Sphinx — smaller than I expected but somehow more mysterious up close. There was a faint smell of dust and something sweet from a nearby tea seller. Hossam told us about Chephren and how the Sphinx has watched over this place forever (or at least since his reign). Lunch came next: nothing fancy but fresh bread and grilled chicken hit the spot after all that sun. Then off to the Grand Egyptian Museum — air conditioning never felt so good. The Tutankhamun collection is… well, hard to put into words without sounding dramatic. Gold everywhere but also tiny things: sandals, little toys he’d owned as a boy.
I didn’t expect to feel so small standing under those ceilings or staring at King Tut’s mask. It’s one thing seeing pictures online; another thing entirely being there with someone explaining what it all meant for Egyptians back then. We ended up talking about life in Cairo today versus ancient times while waiting for our driver back to the hotel — somehow that made everything feel more connected.
