The experience

Your guide picks you up from your Cairo or Giza hotel and drives you straight to the Giza Plateau. An Egyptologist, not a generic driver, walks you through the three great pyramids: Khufu (also called Cheops), his son Khafre, and the smaller Menkaure, explaining the history and construction as you move between them. This is the part most visitors rush or skip: standing where all three line up together, with your guide positioning you for the best photographs.

The camel ride happens here, included in your package, so you get the photo of yourself and the animal with the pyramids behind you: the moment most people come for. After that, you continue to the Great Sphinx, the limestone statue with a pharaoh's head and a lion's body built during Chephren's reign to guard his pyramid. Your guide takes you to the Valley Temple that belonged to Chephren's complex, a smaller but intact structure that gives you a sense of what these sites looked like when they were in use. Lunch and drinks break up the morning and afternoon sections, so you're not moving the whole time.

The second half is the Grand Egyptian Museum, the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts in the world. Your guide leads you through the exhibits, focusing on Tutankhamun's treasures: the famous young king's burial goods that were discovered nearly intact. The museum is air-conditioned and a natural cooldown after hours in the sun. Your driver brings you back to your hotel at the end, so you don't navigate Cairo traffic yourself.
