The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the sand looked—almost gold, but not quite, just before we reached the Giza Pyramids. Our guide, Mahmoud, met us right at the hotel lobby (he waved with both hands, which made me laugh). Driving through Cairo’s morning traffic felt like a small adventure on its own. I kept peeking out the window, trying to catch that first glimpse of the Great Pyramid. When it finally appeared—just this massive shape against a pale sky—I felt weirdly quiet for a second. It’s bigger than you expect, even if you’ve seen it in a thousand photos.

Mahmoud was full of stories (and jokes—some good, some not so much). He explained how Khufu’s pyramid was built stone by stone, pointing out little details I’d never have noticed alone. There was this moment during our panoramic stop when the wind picked up and you could smell something almost metallic in the air—maybe just dust and sun on old rock? We climbed onto camels for a 30-minute ride across the plateau. My camel was called “Sultan” and he seemed to have opinions about my riding skills. The view from up there…honestly surreal. You see all three pyramids lined up and Cairo sprawling behind them like another world entirely.

I didn’t expect to feel so small standing in front of the Sphinx. Mahmoud told us about ancient legends—how people used to believe it guarded secret passages under the sand. There were kids selling postcards nearby; one tried to teach me how to say “thank you” in Arabic (“shukran”) but I probably butchered it because he laughed and gave me a thumbs-up anyway. Lunch after all that walking tasted better than it should’ve—flatbread still warm, grilled chicken with spices I couldn’t name, sweet mint tea at the end. Maybe it was just relief from the heat or maybe Egyptian food really is that good.

The drive back was quieter; everyone sort of drifted into their own thoughts or naps as Mahmoud navigated us through Giza traffic again. I still think about that view from Sultan’s back—the city on one side, ancient stones on the other—and wonder what it must’ve felt like thousands of years ago out here in this same sun.
