The Experience

The day starts at your hotel with pickup in an air-conditioned vehicle and a guide who speaks English or Arabic. You arrive at the Giza Plateau as the morning light hits the pyramids, where you'll stand in front of the Great Sphinx—carved from limestone over 4,500 years ago—and walk the grounds of the Pyramids of Giza. The tour includes free entry to the Pyramid of Queen Hetepheres, a quieter royal monument where you can step inside and see the burial chamber of King Khufu's mother. A 30-minute camel ride follows, crossing the desert the way ancient travelers did, with views across the plateau.

After Giza, the route shifts to Islamic Cairo. You'll visit Al-Hakim Mosque, built between 990 and 1013 AD by Fatimid caliphs and standing as one of the oldest and largest mosques in the city, then Al-Azhar Mosque with its mix of Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman architecture spanning over 1,000 years. A walk down Al-Muizz Street—one of Cairo's oldest thoroughfares—passes Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman palaces and gates. Khan El-Khalili market comes next, the centuries-old bazaar where you can wander narrow alleys lined with lanterns, silver, spices and cafés.

The Grand Egyptian Museum, located minutes from the Giza Pyramids, houses the world's largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun. A traditional Egyptian lunch and bottled water are included, and the tour runs 7 to 9 hours depending on which sites you select. Hotel drop-off closes the day.
