The Experience
“You want to try saying Khufu?” our guide, Ahmed, grinned as we stepped out of the car onto the crunching gravel near the Great Pyramid of Giza. I tried—badly—and he laughed, but not unkindly. The morning haze was already lifting off Cairo, and there was this dry heat that clings to your skin but somehow doesn’t feel heavy. I’d seen pictures of the pyramids a million times, but standing there with dust on my shoes and a bit of sand in my mouth—yeah, it’s different. Ahmed pointed out how the blocks fit together without mortar. He ran his hand along a groove in the stone and told us about workers hauling these up ramps thousands of years ago. I tried to imagine that noise—the shouting, maybe even singing—and for a second it felt close.
We ducked inside one of the smaller pyramids (I think it was Queen Hetepheres’), which honestly surprised me. The air changed—cooler, almost damp—and it smelled faintly like old earth and something metallic. My knees wobbled going down those narrow passages; Ahmed joked that ancient Egyptians must’ve been slimmer than us. He showed us where they found bits of royal furniture and gold trinkets. It’s strange how quiet it gets underground—even with other visitors around, everyone just whispers or stares.
The camel ride across the panorama area was way less awkward than I feared (though my camel had opinions about stopping for photos). You get this wide view—Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure all lined up—and for a minute you can almost ignore the city behind you. Our camel handler sang something under his breath; I never caught the words but it stuck with me anyway. By midday we were hungry and dusty—lunch at a local spot tasted like cumin and grilled meat, with cold soda that hit just right after all that sun.
Seeing the Great Sphinx up close is odd—it’s both bigger and smaller than you expect? Ahmed told us stories about missing noses and old kings who dreamed under its paws. There were kids selling postcards nearby and a breeze that carried hints of car exhaust mixed with sweet tea from somewhere behind us. On the drive back to Cairo I kept thinking about those stones still standing after thousands of years, and how small you feel next to them—but in a good way.
