The Experience

“Did you know the Great Pyramid was the tallest thing on earth for almost 4,000 years?” That’s how our guide Ahmed started, just as we stepped out of the van and into that dry Cairo air. The Giza Pyramids were right there—bigger than I’d pictured from photos, honestly. We dodged a couple of souvenir sellers (one tried to sell me a tiny pyramid for “good luck”) and Ahmed laughed, saying I should save my luck for climbing onto a camel later. The sand had this faint mineral smell that stuck to my shoes. I kept touching the limestone blocks when no one was looking—hard to believe humans stacked these up so long ago.

The walk between Khufu’s pyramid and Khafre’s felt longer than it looks on a map. Ahmed pointed out the granite at Menkaure’s base—he said it came all the way from Aswan. I tried to imagine hauling rocks that far in this heat (and it wasn’t even noon yet). At the panoramic viewpoint, we met a camel named Simba who looked like he’d seen every tourist in Egypt. Getting on was… less graceful than I hoped—my friend caught it on video and won’t let me forget it. But riding with all three pyramids behind you? That part felt unreal. There was this weird quiet up there, except for Simba chewing and some distant horns from Giza city below.

We finished by the Great Sphinx—its face is more weathered up close, almost gentle. Ahmed offered to take our photo (“I’m better than Instagram filters,” he joked). By then my shirt had collected half the desert but I didn’t care; we ended up at a little spot nearby for lunch—koshary piled high with crispy onions and spicy sauce. Not sure if it was hunger or just being there, but it tasted like victory after all that walking. Still think about that view from atop Simba sometimes—you know?
