Your guide arrives at 8am, and you're about to spend the next ten hours standing in front of stones that have been standing for 4,600 years—which sounds simple until you're actually there, squinting up at the Great Pyramid of Cheops and realizing no photograph prepared you for the scale. The day starts at Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser rises from the desert like a wedding cake built for a god. From Saqqara you drive south to Dahshur, where the architecture gets stranger and more human at once.
