The Experience

We were barely out of the car when the Giza Pyramids just—appeared. I mean, you see them in photos all your life but nothing quite prepares you for how they sit there, stubborn and massive against the sand. Our guide, Hossam, handed me a bottle of water and grinned like he’d seen this reaction a thousand times. The air was dry and already warm even though it was early. There were camels everywhere—one tried to nudge my backpack (maybe hoping for snacks?). We circled Khufu’s pyramid while Hossam explained how it was built; he tossed in little stories about workers’ graffiti and old burial rituals. I kept running my hand over the limestone blocks—they’re rougher than I expected. The Sphinx looked smaller than I thought but somehow more mysterious up close. We did the camel ride too—my camel was called Mona Lisa and she had opinions about my balance.

Saqqara felt quieter, almost eerie in a good way. The Step Pyramid stands out against this huge sky—Imhotep’s name came up a lot (Hossam called him “the Steve Jobs of ancient Egypt,” which made me laugh). Inside some tombs, you can still see faded colors on the walls if you squint; it smells faintly musty but not unpleasant. By Dahshur, we were alone except for a couple of local kids waving from their bikes. The Bent Pyramid looks like it’s trying to stand up straight but can’t quite manage—a weirdly charming sight. I liked that nobody rushed us here; we just wandered around in the wind for a bit.

The next morning, Cairo woke up loud as ever—car horns and vendors shouting before breakfast. At the Grand Egyptian Museum, there’s this echoey hush inside that feels almost sacred (except when school groups barrel past). Ramses II greets you right away—he’s enormous—and then you get lost among Tutankhamun’s treasures and endless artifacts. Hossam knew every shortcut through the galleries; he pointed out tiny details I would’ve missed on my own, like gold thread in an old sandal or graffiti scratched into stone by someone bored centuries ago.

I loved walking through Khan el Khalili bazaar later—the smell of coffee mixed with perfume oils and grilled meat drifting everywhere. A shopkeeper tried to teach me how to say “thank you” in Arabic (I failed spectacularly). We ducked into El Fishawy café for mint tea while watching people haggle over scarves outside. At some point I realized I hadn’t checked my phone for hours—I just wanted to watch everything happening around me.

By sunset at the Citadel’s Alabaster Mosque, Cairo looked golden and endless from up high. My feet hurt but honestly? I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy at home. Two days felt both long and too short—I left with sand in my shoes and more questions than answers about this city.
