The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel lobby in Cairo or Giza and drives you first to Giza, where you explore the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx: a limestone colossus with a pharaoh's head and lion body, built during the reign of Khephren to guard his pyramid. From the panoramic viewpoint, you see all three pyramids together in a single frame. The Valley Temple, where pharaohs underwent mummification before burial, sits nearby and connects directly to the Sphinx complex.

From Giza, the route heads south to Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt's Old Kingdom (2686–2181 BC) and the seat of power for the pharaohs who built the pyramids. The city's ruins and the Mit Rahina Museum hold artifacts and context that explain why these monuments were raised in the desert rather than in Cairo itself: a civilization that rose and fell long before the modern city existed.

The final stop is Saqqara, a vast necropolis that archaeologists often find more significant than Giza. Its centerpiece is Djoser's Step Pyramid, dating to the 3rd dynasty (2667–2448 BC). It was the first all-stone structure ever built on earth and the first to use stacked mastabas, rectangular tomb structures, to create the stepped form. This innovation directly influenced the smooth-sided pyramids at Giza and elsewhere. The site holds burials spanning from before the Old Kingdom through the Greek period of Egyptian history.
