The Experience

The first thing that hit me was how the air felt different out by the Giza Pyramids—dry, but not harsh, almost like you could taste the dust in the morning. Our guide, Ahmed, met us right at our hotel in Cairo (he was early, actually), and we drove out past all the city noise until suddenly there they were: Cheops, Khafre, Menkaure. I’d seen them in photos my whole life but standing there…well, it’s weirdly quiet except for the occasional camel handler calling out to tourists. Ahmed pointed out how each pyramid had its own personality—Khafre still holding onto some of its smooth casing stones near the top. I tried to imagine what it looked like 4,000 years ago. Hard to picture with buses idling nearby, but somehow it works.

We walked down toward the Great Sphinx of Giza next. Up close it’s more battered than I expected—the nose is long gone—but its face has this calm that kind of sneaks up on you. Ahmed told us stories about Khafre (the pharaoh whose face is probably on the Sphinx) and showed us where restoration work had patched up old cracks. There was a breeze that carried this faint scent of limestone dust and something sweet from a nearby tea vendor. I bought a cup just to have an excuse to linger there longer.

The drive out to Saqqara felt like a reset—less crowded, more palm trees flashing by outside the window. The Step Pyramid is different from Giza’s giants; older, rougher around the edges. Ahmed explained how it was built for King Zoser and basically changed everything about Egyptian tomb design. There weren’t many people around so you could actually hear your footsteps echo inside one of the smaller tombs we peeked into. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing there.

Memphis was our last stop—a little museum under big trees with birds everywhere (and way more shade than anywhere else that day). The colossal statue of Ramses II is lying down under a roof; his feet are as tall as my chest. There’s also this alabaster sphinx that looks almost playful compared to Giza’s stern guardian. By then we were dusty and tired but happy—Ahmed dropped us back at our hotel just before sunset and I still think about that tea by the Sphinx sometimes.
