The experience

Hotel pickup starts the day, then the drive takes you to the Giza plateau to see the three Pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaura: the ones that once belonged to the kings of ancient Egypt. A viewing platform gives you the angle for the photograph with all three at your back. From there you walk down the valley to the Great Sphinx, the limestone figure with a man's head and a lion's body that guarded the pyramids for thousands of years.

The guide then drives you to Memphis, the old capital of Egypt, now an open-air museum. You'll see the enormous statue of Ramses II and smaller sphinx statues scattered across the site. Saqqara comes next, about 15 miles southeast of Cairo, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser stands: one of the first attempts to build a smooth-sided pyramid, erected by King Zoser. Lunch at a local restaurant breaks the day before the return to your hotel.
