The Experience

The day didn’t start perfectly — I forgot my hat in the hotel lobby, so by the time our guide, Hossam, greeted us outside, I was already squinting at the Cairo sun. He just grinned and handed me a spare (honestly, that gesture set the tone). The drive out to the Giza Pyramids felt both familiar and surreal; city noise faded into this dry hush as we pulled up. Khufu’s pyramid loomed bigger than I’d pictured. There was this faint smell of dust and camel sweat in the air — not unpleasant, just real. Hossam pointed out some graffiti from the 1800s on one of the stones. I wouldn’t have noticed it if he hadn’t stopped us there.

We shuffled down toward the Great Sphinx next. Its face is more battered than you see in photos — almost gentle. A group of school kids were practicing English nearby (“Where are you from?”) and their teacher kept shushing them but they giggled anyway. The Sphinx just sat there, lion body stretched out like it had all the time in the world. After that we drove to Saqqara for the Step Pyramid of Djoser. The wind picked up a bit and sand got everywhere (I still find grains in my bag), but standing in front of something that old — older than Giza — made me feel tiny in a good way.

Lunch was at this family-run place near Memphis, nothing fancy but honestly delicious — grilled chicken, rice with cinnamon, bread still warm from the oven. Our guide told us stories about Ramses II while we ate. In Memphis itself, there’s this massive statue lying on its back; people take selfies but I just stared at its toes for a while (they’re huge). The day wasn’t perfect — traffic back into Cairo was slow and I spilled water on myself trying to open a bottle — but that kind of made it better? It felt lived-in.
