The Experience

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice at the Giza Pyramids would be the wind — gritty, warm, carrying this faint scent of old stone and camel. Our guide, Hossam, met us right at the hotel with a grin and a sign (my name spelled just slightly off — made me smile). He started telling us about Cheops before we even got out of the van. The pyramids themselves? Bigger than my brain could process at first. Standing there, you feel kind of small in a good way. There was this kid selling postcards who kept waving at us; Hossam just winked and said, “He knows more languages than me.”

We walked around the Sphinx — its face softer than I expected in real life — and then drove out to Saqqara. The drive was bumpy but I liked watching Cairo peel away into fields and palms. The Step Pyramid of Djoser looked almost gentle compared to Giza’s sharp lines, but Hossam explained how it was actually older by centuries. There was this moment where he pressed his hand against one of the stones and invited us to do the same — “Touch history,” he said. My palm came away dusty. Lunch after that was in a noisy local spot where everyone seemed to know our guide; we ate grilled chicken with rice that tasted smoky and somehow sweet at once.

Last stop: Memphis. It’s quieter there — fewer tourists, more stray cats weaving around statues half-swallowed by grass. The statue of Ramses II is so huge you have to walk its length just to take it in (I tried to pronounce his name like Hossam did but definitely failed). The alabaster Sphinx looked tired in the afternoon heat. By then my head was full but not in a bad way — just heavy with all these layers of time stacked up together.
