The experience

Seven to eight hours takes you through four of Egypt's most significant ancient sites. Your guide picks you up from your hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle and drives first to Giza, where you walk among the Pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus, then stand in front of the Great Sphinx, which dates back to the reign of Chephren. You also visit the Valley Temple, the limestone structure that once served the pyramid complex. The guide is an Egyptologist who speaks English and can explain what you're standing in front of (the scale, the construction, the dynasties) rather than just pointing.

From Giza, the route moves south to Sakkara to see the Step Pyramid of Zoser, a 3rd Dynasty monument and the oldest major stone structure in the world. Lunch follows at a local restaurant, included in the price. Then you transfer to Memphis, the first capital of Egypt under King Menes, which ruled as the center of Egyptian culture and power for over 3,000 years. There you see the Statue of Ramses II and the alabaster Sphinx of Memphis, both carved from the same limestone that built the pyramids.

The final stop is Dahshur, an ancient royal necropolis about 40 kilometers south of Cairo. The pyramids here were built between 2613 and 2589 BC. The Bent Pyramid is the most recognizable, its sides angled sharply midway up. Bottled water is provided throughout the day, and the vehicle returns you to your hotel at the end.
