The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Cairo or Giza hotel and a drive to the Giza Plateau, where the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure stand on the desert edge about 13 kilometers southwest of downtown Cairo. Your guide walks you through the Giza Necropolis, explaining the valley temples, causeways and mortuary temples that make up each pharaoh's complex. You'll have a close-up view of the Great Sphinx (the limestone guardian with a lion's body and the head of King Khafre) that stands by the funeral complex.

From Giza, the tour moves to Memphis, Egypt's first capital, founded around 3100 BC. Then you head to Saqqara to see the Step Pyramid, also called the Zoser Pyramid, the oldest building structure in the world. The itinerary includes stops at the Pyramid of Teti and the Mastaba of Ti, where tomb walls show scenes of daily life in ancient Egypt. Along the way, you'll have 20-minute stops at local shops: Paradise Perfumes & Flower Cotton, the Key of Life Papyrus workshop where artisans demonstrate papyrus-making, and a handmade carpet school where weavers work at their looms.

The final leg takes you to Dahshur, about 40 kilometers south of Cairo, to see two pyramids built under Pharaoh Sneferu around 2600 BC. The Bent Pyramid rises at a 54-degree angle for the first 47 meters, then shifts to 43 degrees, creating its distinctive bent shape: a rare example of early pyramid design. The Red Pyramid, the third-largest in Egypt, was built with red limestone and is believed to be Egypt's first successful true smooth-sided pyramid. The tour ends with drop-off at your hotel. The full day runs about nine hours, with entry fees covering basic site access.
