experience

What’s the experience like?

"You ever seen a pyramid before breakfast?" That’s what our guide, Mahmoud, joked as we left Cairo’s morning traffic behind. The city faded fast—one minute it was honking cars and the next, desert wind through the cracked window. I could smell sand and something sweet, maybe date palms somewhere out of sight. We reached Sakkara first. Those old stones looked almost soft in the early sun, not harsh like I’d pictured. Mahmoud traced his hand along the wall carvings—he seemed to know every story by heart—and I tried to imagine building something this big without machines. Still can’t.

Memphis was next. It’s strange seeing the Colossus of Ramses II lying down like he’s just resting after a long shift (Mahmoud said he probably never rested). There were school kids on a field trip, giggling and posing for photos near the alabaster Sphinx. The air smelled faintly of dust and citrus from someone peeling an orange nearby. I didn’t expect to feel so small standing next to those statues—like history was pressing in from all sides but in a good way.

Dahshur felt emptier than Giza ever did. We walked right up to the Red Pyramid; no crowds, just us and a couple of goats wandering around. The Bent Pyramid looked odd from far away—like it changed its mind halfway up—but that made me like it more somehow. Climbing inside was weirdly quiet except for my own breath echoing off the stone. Lunch was an option (we skipped it), but honestly I was still full from breakfast pastries at the hotel, so maybe next time. On the drive back, Mahmoud pointed out fields where farmers waved as we passed—I waved back even though they couldn’t see me through the glass.
