The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives you to the Giza Plateau, where the three great pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinus stand as they have for over 4,500 years. These are the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still standing. At their foot lies the Great Sphinx, a limestone colossus with a pharaoh's head and a lion's body, carved during the reign of Chephren and uncovered in 1912. The guide walks you through the site, explaining the construction and the pharaohs who built them.

From Giza, the vehicle takes you south to Saqqara, the City of the Dead, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser rises in tiers above the desert. Built around 2630 BC in the 3rd Dynasty, it is the world's oldest major stone structure and marks the moment when Egyptian builders moved from mud brick to stone. The scale and the engineering shift it represents are visible in the stone itself.

The final stop is Memphis, the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom and a center of rule and culture for over 3,000 years. You see the Statue of Ramses II, one of the few monumental pieces that remain from the city's vast temples and palaces. By the end of the day, you have moved through four distinct periods and sites of ancient Egypt without arranging transport, tickets or a guide yourself. Mineral water is provided throughout the ride.
