The Experience

I’d seen the Giza Pyramids on postcards my whole life, but nothing prepared me for how big they actually are. Our guide, Ahmed, grinned when I just stood there gawking — he said most people go quiet at first. The air smelled like warm sand and something sweet from a nearby cart (dates maybe?). We got there early enough that it was still cool, and Ahmed explained how Cheops’ pyramid lines up with the stars — I’m not sure I really got it, but he made it sound almost mystical. There was a camel chewing lazily near us; I tried to pet it and nearly lost my hat.

The Sphinx was next — honestly, she looks smaller than I expected but somehow more mysterious. Ahmed told us about the missing nose (he had theories), and as we walked around the paws, a group of school kids waved and shouted “Welcome!” in English. That made me laugh. The keyword “Giza pyramids tour” doesn’t do justice to just being here and hearing all these layers of history in the dust and wind. It’s loud with voices one minute and then weirdly silent when you step back from the crowds.

After that we drove out to Sakkara. The road gets quieter — fewer horns, more palm trees flashing by outside the window. At Djoser’s Step Pyramid, Ahmed pointed out carvings I’d have missed on my own. He even let me try reading some hieroglyphs (I failed spectacularly). Lunch was at this local spot near Memphis: grilled chicken, rice with spices I couldn’t place, lots of fresh bread. There was laughter from another table and someone singing softly behind the counter. It felt good to sit down after all that walking; my shoes were full of sand but I didn’t care.

Memphis itself is half-ruin, half-open-air museum — huge statues lying on their sides like they’re sleeping off a long party. Ramses II is massive up close; you can see every crack in his stone feet. On the drive back to Cairo our group was mostly quiet, tired in that good way after a long day out in the sun. I keep thinking about that first moment seeing the pyramids — how small you feel standing next to something so old.
