The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the morning light hit the stones—so sharp it almost hurt my eyes. We’d just stepped out of the van at the Giza plateau, and there they were: Khufu, Khafre, Menkaure. Our guide, Ahmed, grinned when he saw me staring. “They’re bigger up close, right?” he said. He pointed out the grooves where workers once dragged blocks, and I could almost hear their voices under the wind. The Sphinx looked both fierce and tired—sand dusted its paws. Someone nearby was selling mint tea; I caught a whiff of it as we made our way around the pyramids.

I didn’t expect Saqqara to feel so different. The drive was about forty minutes but somehow felt like crossing centuries instead of kilometers. There’s this weird quiet there—maybe because there aren’t as many crowds? The Step Pyramid rose in front of us like a staircase to nowhere. Ahmed showed us some carvings in Unas’ pyramid; I tried tracing them with my finger (probably not allowed, oops). He explained how these were spells for the afterlife. It was cooler underground—almost damp—and I shivered even though it was June.

Lunch came just when I needed it: grilled chicken, smoky eggplant, flatbread still warm from the fire. We sat outside while Ahmed told us how his grandmother used to make molokhia soup “even greener than this,” he joked. After that we drove a short way to Memphis—ten minutes maybe? The open-air museum felt like a giant’s playground. Ramses II lying on his back was massive; I couldn’t get his whole face into my photo no matter how far I stepped back. There was another sphinx too, smaller but somehow more mysterious.

By late afternoon my shoes were full of sand and my head full of names I couldn’t pronounce (I tried “Menkaure” three times before giving up). But standing in those places—Giza pyramids, Saqqara, Memphis—I felt small in a good way. Like part of something really old and ongoing. Still think about that light on stone sometimes.
