The experience

The guide picks you up at your hotel and drives you to Giza Plateau to see the three pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Menkaure, guarded by the Sphinx. The Great Pyramid of Cheops is the only one of the seven ancient wonders still standing. It predates every other wonder on the list by two thousand years. You walk the grounds with someone trained to explain what you're looking at, not just point at it. A camel ride around the structures is optional if you want it.

From there you head to Saqqara to see the step pyramid of King Zoser, the first pyramid ever built in Egypt and the first large stone structure in history. The complex sits separate from the tourist crush at Giza, and the Egyptologist guide contextualizes what you're seeing: why it was built this way, what it meant at the time. Then you move on to Memphis, Egypt's first capital, to walk the open-air museum there. Hotel pickup and drop-off bookend the day, and snacks are included throughout.

The tour runs eight hours total. You choose at checkout whether you want lunch added, a camel ride, or just the guide and entry fees with the car. The guide speaks English, Spanish, German or Arabic depending on which option you pick. Children from age one are welcome.
