The Experience
Ever wondered what it feels like to stand in front of something that’s been there for thousands of years? I still remember stepping out of the van—dusty air, a bit warm even early on—and just staring up at the Giza Pyramids. Our guide, Ahmed, joked about how Cheops probably never imagined busloads of people gawking at his tomb. The stones looked rougher than I expected, kind of chipped and sun-bleached. There was this camel nearby making a weird snorting sound, which made us all laugh and break the ice.
We wandered around for a while—Ahmed explained how Chephren and Mykerinus built their own pyramids right next to Cheops’, almost like a family rivalry. The Sphinx was just sitting there, half-shadowed in the morning light, looking both fierce and tired. I tried to take a selfie but mostly got sand in my mouth. Some kids were selling postcards; one had the brightest smile but honestly I was too distracted by the sheer size of everything to buy anything.
The Egyptian Museum was cooler inside (thankfully), and it smelled faintly like old paper and something metallic. There are so many artifacts—gold jewelry, tiny carved animals, even ancient bread loaves behind glass—that it gets overwhelming fast. Ahmed pointed out a necklace that once belonged to a queen; I could barely imagine someone actually wearing it. We got lunch after (included in the tour), sitting together swapping stories about what surprised us most. For me? Just how small you feel surrounded by so much history. It sticks with you.
