The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Cairo or Giza hotel. A guide takes you to the Giza Plateau, where you stand in front of the three main pyramids: the Great Pyramid of Khufu (the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), the Pyramid of Khafre built around 2540 BC for the pharaoh Khafre, and the smaller Pyramid of Menkaure. You walk the plateau to the Great Sphinx, the limestone guardian with a lion's body and the head of King Chephren, then visit the Valley Temple where priests performed mummification rituals for the pharaohs. The external views of the pyramids are included. Stepping inside any of them requires buying an additional ticket during the tour.

After the plateau, you head to the Egyptian Museum on the north side of Tahrir Square in Downtown Cairo. The museum holds one of the world's most important collections of ancient artifacts: the treasures of Tutankhamun, mummies, jewelry, grave goods and everyday objects from Egyptians whose names are lost to history. The scale of the collection means you move through thousands of years in a single afternoon. Lunch (local Egyptian food) is included and typically happens between the Giza stops and the museum, so the day holds together without a separate meal break.

The tour finishes at Khan el-Khalili, the 14th-century bazaar in Old Cairo where narrow lanes open onto stalls selling spices, textiles, metalwork and souvenirs. Your guide drops you back at your hotel in Cairo or Giza. The whole route runs 8 to 10 hours. A guide speaks English, Spanish or Arabic depending on the option you choose, and the private air-conditioned vehicle stays with you throughout.
