The Experience

The day started with a knock at my hotel door—our guide, Ahmed, was already grinning in the hallway. He had this way of making you feel like you’d known him forever. The building itself is kind of faded pink and busy outside, but inside it felt hushed except for school kids giggling near Tutankhamun’s mask. There are so many things—jewelry, mummies, even old toys—that it gets overwhelming fast. Ahmed moved us through just enough rooms so we didn’t get lost or tired (though honestly, by then my feet were done). Last stop: Khan el-Khalili bazaar. It’s loud and crowded, smells like coffee and perfume oil mixed together. Sellers called out in Arabic and English; one offered me mint tea when I hesitated over some bracelets. I bought one mostly because he made me laugh.
