The Experience

Honestly, I thought I’d be more prepared for seeing the Giza Pyramids up close, but nothing really gets you ready for that first moment. Our guide, Hossam, grinned when he saw my jaw drop—he said everyone does it. The air on the Giza Plateau was dry and a little dusty, but not in a bad way; it just felt ancient somehow. We walked right up to the Great Pyramid of Giza and I ran my hand along one of the stones—cooler than I expected, rough under my palm. There were camels nearby (of course), and their owners called out greetings in Arabic and English. The Sphinx looked smaller than I’d imagined from photos, but somehow more mysterious in person. Hossam told us stories about missing noses and pharaohs while we squinted against the sun.

The Egyptian Museum was next—honestly, it’s overwhelming in the best way. It smells a bit like old paper and stone (if that makes sense), and there are so many things crammed into glass cases that I kept losing track of what era we were even in. Hossam pointed out a tiny statue of Khufu that I would’ve missed completely; he laughed when I tried to pronounce some of the names. Lunch was included—a simple plate of koshari at a local spot—which hit the spot after all that walking. Sitting there with city noise filtering through open windows, I felt oddly at home.

Khan el-Khalili market is just chaos—in a good way. So many colors and voices layered over each other, people selling everything from spices to plastic pyramids to gold jewelry. One shopkeeper tried to teach me how to say “thank you” in Arabic (I definitely butchered it). By then my feet were tired but I didn’t want to leave yet; there’s something about Cairo that keeps you moving even when you think you’re done for the day. Back in the car with our bottled water sweating between us, I watched minarets slide by outside and wondered how many layers this city really has. Still thinking about that view from the plateau.
